LAYIN IT ON THE LINE DEPT. A heartstomper is a heartstomper is a heartstomper. Ain't that the truth? Two-hit wonders (well, in this here hit parade, where stats are never set in stone) THE STUDENTS made a couple of singles featuring our favorite rock n' roll songs of all time -- today Marc and I host their songwriter, 80 year old William "Prez" Tyus who begins to unravel the heartbustin' story behind a gang of teenagers in Cincinnati, Ohio .... a teenager writes a song about a girl in school, who will never know that the many-million seller is about her... the Beach Boys cover it... the Ronettes cover it... the message is timeless and divine... and the backstory, the blinding truth. This is the first time ever with Prez talking about his songs- EVER EVER EVER. And here's the favorite, for reasons in the stratosphere where 13 year old lead singer Leroy King dwells, waiting for celestial fan mail from some flounder, one being a nut in Brooklyn whose brain goes blatz every time he gets on his proverbial knees. Here's the first label shots on NOTE - you may have them on this gorgeous, hallowed Indianapolis label but more likely on Chess, Checker, Argo. Thanks, Val- hugely! Originally aired 1/16/20
