Women’s Health is More Than Just a Woman’s Issue

Blessing Adesiyan and Andrea Mullan recognize the importance of women's health on their careers. So many women suffer from silent diseases, especially women of color. We spoke with Nehal Farouky MD, co-founder, and president of NYC-based VIVA EVE, a fibroid treatment and women's health center. Nehal is a mom of two boys, she ran a private psychology practice in Egypt for more than a decade and is herself a fibroid survivor. Her mission is to reinvent how women's health is managed. Their focus on fibroids was what caught Blessing's attention. The statistics are staggering, demonstrating just how deeply Black and Brown women are affected by fibroids, who are 2-3 times more likely to have fibroids than white women.    Doctors believe it’s due to the following There may be some genetic element that increases this tendency among African-American women. One study suggested that greater overall lifetime stress might help trigger fibroids Some evidence suggests environmental factors, such as diet or a history of abuse, increase the risk.
