Twenty year Firefighter Mario Badillo of Rescue 10, Houston, TX prides himself on being the backstep firefighter. In a system that typically expects promotion, Mario is quite confident in his current roll as a senior firefighter in the tech rescue field. His fourteen years riding on the rescue has certainly provided the challenges and experience he desired. Many good and some tragic, his experience and tenure has allowed him to become a good mentor to those coming into the rescue as well as providing mentorship to his bosses. To Mario, influence and training is not just a downward trend but rather, learning can happen from the bottom up. Remaining in his senior position, he provides a sound voice from the backstep for the new guy and bosses alike. Someone has to carry on and promote the skills and importance of the rescue company; and Mario is doing just that.
