124. I've Had alot of Experience Being Unexperienced - Michael O'Hare

National Fire Radio Podcast Platform - A podcast by Jeremy Donch

22 years with the City of Houston, TX Fire Department has provided plenty of opportunities for Captain Michael O'Hare. 14 years of his tenure has been in the rescue services division of the department. Currently serving as the Rescue Training Officer, Mike's approach to training often differs from many. His "Back to the Basics" approach is truly that. Training to the point of muscle memory on the basic of tasks will provide the right approach when it's needed. We tend to over complicate our training and responses. Just because the equipment is on the truck it doesn't mean it always needs to be deployed when the situation doesn't warrant it. More isn't always better and Mike believes in setting his people up for success for game time. Focusing on reality based training is the best method. So often we get caught up with the "what if's" when training. The "what if's" should be reserved for conversation, not a way to intimidate or make our people fail during training. Mike's belief in his people and their training allows for a well oiled rescue division within the Houston, TX Fire Department.
