Ep 22 – Women’s liberation in 1970s Australia

People's History of Australia - A podcast by People's History of Australia

In the early 1960s, the situation for women in Australia was grim. Abortion was illegal, divorces were almost impossible to obtain, married women were banned from being employed in the public service, women were blocked from employment in a huge range of occupations and industries, openly unequal wages were enshrined in law, sexual violence was legal within marriages, paid parental leave didn't exist, and everyday Australian culture was soaked with sexism. In this episode, we chat with Janey Stone, who was involved in the extraordinary women's liberation movement of the 1970s to end the oppression of women and to fight for a new kind of society.
